Revered by the the motoring press and enthusiasts from the day it was launched in 1996 the Lotus Elise became an instant icon and remained in production for 25 years. With over 35,000 cars produced it saved the company from extinction and has become a highly collectable classic for those that value purity of driving experience.
The brilliantly clever design prioritised weight saving above almost everything else, which allowed strong performance to be achieved from modest powertrains and one of the purest driving experiences available. The Series 1 cars, produced from 1996 - 2001 are the lightest and purest examples of the Elise line-up, but are the most compromised to live with and maintain. The Series 2 cars, produced from 2001 - 2011 allowed Lotus to meet new crash regulations, but also introduce changes to make the cars easier to live with, without fundamentally diluting the driving pleasure. From 2004 the Series 2 was produced with the more powerful and reliable Toyota 2ZZ-GE engine, which replaced the ageing Rover k-series engine, and it is just such a car we are delighted to offer for sale.
Bought new in New Zealand this S2 Elise 111R has been cherished by its one and only owner for the last 21 years. So fond of the car was he that he imported it to the UK when he moved over in 2021.
