The original Quattroporte was launched in the early 60’s during the heyday of the Maserati brand. Designed to be fast, comfortable and stylish it helped broaden the audience for the company and created a formula that would be developed over the years and 6 separate generations of car. The most successful of these was the 5th generation car, developed under the ownership of Ferrari, designed by Pininfarina and launched to great acclaim in 2003.
The car was initially launched with a 4.2l V8 engine producing circa 400bhp and driving through a single clutch automated manual gearbox, but developed heavily over the years. In 2008 the car was facelifted and a 6 speed ZF automatic gearbox fitted to improve refinement and durability. At the same time the S model was launched, which was fitted with the uprated 4.7l V8 engine (producing circa 425bhp) and uprated brakes and re-tuned suspension. The 5th generation cars were produced through to 2012, by which time just over 7,500 had been produced. The 6th generation car was significantly larger than the 5th and lost much of the character of the earlier Ferrari developed model.
