We are delighted to offer for sale the very first Tipo 184 chassis created by Dowsetts cars. Dowsetts cars was a joint venture between TV’s Ant Anstead and engineer Darren Collins which resulted in the Tipo 184, a very clever homage to the hugely successful Alfa Romeo Tipo158/9 racing cars of the1930s/40s. Whilst the cars are designed in the style of a monoposto racing car, they are engineered on the robust and reliable MX5 Mazda running gear and available as kits, or fully built vehicles. The original plans included a race series, but a number of cars were also converted for use on the road.
The example we are delighted to offer for sale was built by our vendor, a professional boatbuilder and classic car restorer, who took delivery of his kit in 2022 and spent 12 months refining and perfecting the build to achieve his dream car. The basis of this car is a low mileage 2003 MX-5, which donated its engine, gearbox, electronics, suspension and brakes to the build. The car that was sourced had covered only 40,000 miles, but despite the low mileage and in the interests of quality, all components thoroughly cleaned, serviced and upgraded where required before being utilised in the build.
The fit and finish of the car is a testament to the craftmanship of the builder and owner. There are a number of bespoke features that were developed by the owner through the build, including the cycle wings, front and rear light pods, exhaust heat shield and stainless steel roll-over bar. The paintwork is particularly stunning, being built up of 10 layers of paint and finished in Alfa Romeo Rosso Competizione as seen on the 8C. The tan-coloured leather upholstery for the seat and cockpit trim panels are also the owner's own work.
Since being finished 18 months ago the car has been used sparingly by the owner on trackdays. The car is not currently road registered, but it could be made so with further modifications and an IVA (the donor MX5 V5C comes with the car). Trouble free from day 1, it is now thoroughly proven and ready to be used with confidence by its next owner.
A unique and beautifully built car, this Dowsett Tipo 184 offers an exhilarating driving experience quite unlike anything else. The light weight and strong power give the car real performance, which is combine beautifully with the more classic dynamics of an older single seat racing car. It is a sensory overload on track and could be modified to offer the same experience on the road if required.
Also with the car is a 2 year old, twin axle Ifor Williams trailer with which the car can be transported to trackdays and test days.
